It’s been a tough week…

It’s been a tough week for me. Really a tough 8 weeks with life and my health as I know it. Though I continue to sit in the fire of the World as I know it and watch it all burn around me. I have been pushed and pulled, twisted inside and out and no idea of which way is out. Been wild angry, scared, strong yet vulnerable and calm all at the same time. A FIRE hurtles through me so strong!. My Daughter has seen me on the floor of my kitchen in the fetal position balling my eyes out ra...

VERTIGO – A JOURNEY WITHIN

VERTIGO – A JOURNEY WITHIN 2021 Archibald Portrait Prize Entry. The surge rips over me, startling me as wave upon wave of disorientation crash through me. Disintegrating everything I have ever known. I feel overwhelmed, surrounded, consumed. My world spins, blurs, sinks, rolls and twists. Nothing else exists except this terrible moment. I am in overdrive, trying to fight through...

An Artist Rising Up

An Artist Rising Up Article by Lahnee Pavlovich  Photos by Pablo Pavlovich The first thing I notice pulling into the driveway at Solitude Art Gallery is the music. Well, maybe it’s the bamboo trees hidden among rugged green bushland, but then again, I’m pretty certain it is the music. Loud and boisterous coming from inside the gallery. I walk in a little bemused and find Darren Trebilco, shirt off, brush in hand, painting strokes to the beat. It was at that moment I knew he would have an intere...

DANIELLE SIX MONTHS AT BROKEN HEAD

Artist Statement I find myself forever trying to lose myself and fall into the moment, feverishly searching for ways to remain in the FLOW. I feel strong and find the bold strokes from brush in hand and the rattle of the can of acrylic spray paint rocks me through the day and night, as I ride the vapours of what once was. I remain poised and alive capturing our Broken Head adventure. The blistering heat, the planned for lazy days in the sun non-existent, the constant hiss of uneasiness at our ...

MURRAY This larikin I call Murray typifies the excitement, the joy, the wobble and the bloody awkwardness we all experience in life. With that BIG cheeky grin, life can not be all that bad. A lot of the time, I see Murray basking in the sun by himself, or squabbling with his mates, maybe over an easy meal or that perfect spot with the right amount of s...

To capture a man such as Kirk Pengilly in a portrait is no small feat. He is much more than the guy from INXS with the glasses and the mo. The man has rocked it with the best around the globe and has spent a lot of time in the bright lights.

Away from those spotlights, Kirk experiences life in all its light and shade. Just like the rest of us, he finds moments in his life when he seems to walk a bold path, his direction sure, and all seems to flow. On other days, his path seems all jagged edges, threatening to pierce out of…Read more HERE

The two sides of Kirk Pengilly. Standing in the light but so often overshadowed. The guy from INXS with the glasses and the mo. He w as the one that played the sax, right? The bright lights, the music so quintessentially Australian, the eventual tragedy. That’s one side. Only one dimension.

The Kirk I met is a down-to-earth, genuine kind of guy. He picked me up from the ferry to do his sitting, offered me tea and spoke to me with candour about the ups and downs of his life. The man has lived. Personal and professional tragedies and triumphs. And of course….Read more HERE

PAINTING OF THE MONTH – ‘SHAPE SHIFTER’

Shape Shifter up close detail 3

‘SHAPE SHIFTER’

The world can become so unfamiliar and far disconnected from reality.  For some, this is the norm.  They buy into the dream that some day they will be eating rainbows and feeling fulfilled. Nothing is real, a copy of a copy. Fake nails, fake hair, fake boobs, fake tan, fake money, fake food, fake life, the list just goes on.  We even try to mimic nature and create our own environments.  A sense of control to make us feel safe and hooked on the next latest craze… Some of us fill the planet with our lust for plastic and luxury, leaving others to starve and species to be wiped out.  We are certainly not the master race!

I, too, was one of these consumers, craving the latest gadget, a so called 1st world ‘need’…With the fake and polished lifestyle, the flash car, the house and the money. An empty pit of misery that nearly consumed me.  I am still unravelling the mess of guilt and the void that social expectations imprinted upon me.  Consumerism is what it is all about people, the corporate giants want us to buy, buy and buy!  So, you feel unhappy from a shit week at work, working for someone you don’t like in a job you despise?  Good!  Buy something, buy more until the hurt goes away!  ‘Buy now, cry later’ as they sa

The chameleon could almost be the poster child, for this little game we call ‘modern life’ – our rapidly-changing environment ever requiring of us a constantly updated and fashionable new cover.  Moving through the jungle, changing their appearance to blend into their surrounds, putting on whatever facade is required for survival.  As we move through the social pitfalls of life, we get so experienced with the changes…Putting on one mask for this occasion, a differnt mask for the next.  You get it!  We all change our colours to suit the environment!  However, when we are cornered, like a chameleon, the SHAPE SHIFTER’ truly appears. We leap from the safety of our cover, exposing our true selves, changing rapidly into bright and stronger contrasting colours.  We take a fighting stance and the exposed animalism of this reactive being now puts on a real magic show.  Win or lose, you feel the sting of being human!

Wake up!

I guess the big issue arises when we take a serious look at ourselves in the mirror and realise that the life we have created, with all its multi-facetted complexities, is just bullshit and we TOTALLY LACK SUBSTANCE. Only then can we find our compassion, our LOVE and make the shift.  Do it now before it is too late and you are consumed in your own living hell!

Friday 26th February 2016

Latest news from the Solitude Art Gallery
Hi Solitude Art Tribe!
It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of February…Yikes!  Over the past six weeks the Gallery has been slowly building momentum in a period of the year that is usually slow for visitors.  We are seeing an increasing number of visitors to the Gallery and plenty of enquiries about the ART!

The studio has been busy and off to a great start with the creation of my latest artwork, ‘SHIA’ (check it out HERE).  I am also currently working on two of three large portraits for this year’s national portrait competitions.  I will be entering into the Archibald, Doug Moran and the Black Swan Portrait prizes, so I’m definitely stepping it up with the portraits this year, so there is another busy three months or so to come working on these paintings.

I also have plans bubbling in the pot for a solo show of my artwork called ‘CALL OF THE WILD’.  There will be an exhibition at the Gallery around May-June and I am looking at other options to get the collection down the east coast of Oz.  I am on the look out for new venues/galleries that would be interested in hanging my exhibition.   If you are aware of any venues that would be interested in taking part in this opportunity, please contact the Gallery at info@solitudeart.com.au.

– Barn Owl

For six weeks, I was bombarded relentlessly with the sight of this magnificent Barn Owl. With her outspread wings and piercing eyes, she was flying directly at me with pure power. I tried to force her away, however the more I did, the more I would feel her energy. She came at me from every direction, day, night, it didn’t matter! To be honest I really didn’t want to paint an owl, nor, apparently, did I want to deal with the negative hooks that held me down!

To make it all disappear, all I had to do was to follow the signs and open the door to the other side. In doing this, ‘SHIA’ opened a hidden connection from deep within me. An emerging of true spirit that would recapture and realign me with my true path. She guided me with her intuition, gave me the ability to…Read more HERE:

LORETTA by Sunshine Coast Artist Darren Trebilco – Detail of face

‘LORETTA’

‘LORETTA’ found me, lost in the woods of creative disillusionment. This spirit animal knows when to intervene and when not to. It was a blessing that she showed herself to me. I searched for space within, delving above and below the surface of the true self and found balance.

During this period, she brought me uneasiness, allowing me to feel discomfort so that I could find the good in the dark, a light in the night. The shift allowed me to change old thought patterns and find healthier patterns from my childhood that sustained happiness and creativity. In her spines I found peace and tranquillity as my brush slashed across the canvas in colourful abandonment, nourishing the soul as the world erupted all around me. I put aside fear and found LOVE.

This beautiful power animal saged my mind and heart. Asserting her success and honour, she gave me the strength to dig to in my claws, to remain stubborn, strong, protected and grounded so that I could stand up for myself. Her eyes pierced straight through me, radiating compassion and understanding as I tackled the lessons before me in an attempt to find a happier, stable and healthier life…

‘The journey is long…so remain patient, embrace the road you travel and there you will find success.’

Following a burning passion of self-expression Darren Trebilco works out of his studio in Glenview.
Drawn to the many forms in nature Darren is inspired to express himself creatively. He finds beauty in:
• the texture of a rock or tree
• different shades of the earth in a well-worn track in the bush
• wildlife sightings and experiences
• the power of the rolling surf
• the flickering light camp fires bring at night.
Darren loves to use strong, bold, expressive lines that hold maximum punch and can show movement, power and emotion. He views his work as expressive, spiritual, unique, dynamic and original! His paintings can take months to be fully completed.

Latest Artwork…
‘THUNDER CLOUD’

The wolf spirit holds its steely gaze on the target while the warrior holds his ground. The warrior remains calm, utilising strength, empathy and knowledge to overcome adversity.

Reflecting back over this past year, it has been a physically, artistically and spiritually challenging one for me, but what a very rewarding journey it has been. The above statement expresses, to an extent, the process I have had to move through as I have connected further with my higher self. It has been intense, particularly over the last month, with the new moon and retrograde in full effect.

My meditation has been flawed. Each day, I take a moment out from gallery life, my heart wide open, ready to receive. Recently, however, there has been no room to accept what what the Universe has to offer, as I have been filled to the brim with misguided fear, anxiety flooding my body, the dark storm within evoking old rituals of self doubt and negativity. Far from living my dream and living full in the pursuit of my passion, the clouds have darkened, rolling in, raining on my sunny day. No stars could be seen. Matte black as far as the eye could see. I struggled, wrestled with the darkness, as it turned me inside out. I searched the black, willing my totem to appear through the thick, sticky fog. I shone my search light to all corners of my soul, hoping to find my my guide or for him to see my shining light, but either he saw no such light, or he chose to remain away, steadfast, silent and distant. Had I been abandoned in my time of need? All I was confronted with was my own reflection…My anger and frustration at my totem bubbled as I….Read more HERE

TREBILCO ventures to Sydney…

TREBILCO ventures to Sydney for his 2016 ARCHIBALD PORTRAIT Sitter….
2016 ARCHIBALD SITTER GUESS WHO

Just recently, I ventured down to Sydney to catch up with my 2016 Archibald Portrait sitter.  It was a breath of fresh air to get out of the studio and spend some time with my intriguing subject for next years artwork.  The weather in Sydney was crazy, but it didn’t dampen my creative enthusiasm.  I really appreciated the time,  honesty and openness in conversation shared between myself and my sitter while completing my preliminary work for the portrait.  Such a responsive and professional yet relaxed approach from my subject will definitely allow me to explore and engage on a deeper level with the artwork.  A big thank you to the “Mystery Sitter”!

While TREBILCO was in Sydney for his 2016 ARCHIBALD PORTRAIT Sitter....He check out the Brett Whitely Studio

While I was in Sydney, I made the most of my limited time away from the Gallery and dropped in to view some of the major galleries in the area.  While I enjoyed viewing this years finalist for the 2015 Archibald Portrait prize, the real stand out for me was my visit to the Brett Whitely Studio.  It has been on my wish list for so long!  I highly recommend if you are in Sydney to drop in to the studio.  It was definitely a moving experience for me to take in such unique work at such a close proximity.  I ended up spending over three hours moving throughout the studio, taking in all things Brett Whitely.  I was particularly lucky to catch ‘ALCHEMY’,  18 timber panels of sheer awesomeness.
I left Sydney tired, yet feeling full to the brim with creative juices ready to flow into my next series of artwork.

You howl and snarl at me but it is all I have to contain you, filthy beast. Outside the sun is shining and it’s a wonderful day to ‘WALK THE BLACK DOG’! Time to take a chance, risk a change. My heart might not be in it, but I can at least pretend a joy for life; fake it, as do all those vacant-eyed ghosts that pass me on the street. It has been so...

WHAT A JOURNEY!

WHAT A JOURNEY!

WHAT A JOURNEY! As I sit here writing this blog, I am full of anticipation to be reunited with my 2015 Archibald portrait entry, ‘THE MAN WHO HAS NO IMAGINATION HAS NO WINGS’… I have to admit, I really enjoy viewing my artwork in the months after I have completed a piece. During the painting process, I am so heavily engrossed that I do not see the work as a whole. Just as dash here, a dab there. Fully immersed in the spirit of the piece, I allow the energy to flow through me. Sometimes it feels ...

LOYALTY & COURAGE – Spirit Bird Diptych The moment had come. After waiting patiently for two months, my timber frames standing blank and readied, you finally arrived. My creative energy had been fuelled by months of anticipation. As you passed overhead I could hear your loud, haunting cries echoing through the studio and I could feel them passing through my body. You announced your arrival, a call to spirit as you soared across ancient songlines with the slow, methodical and distinctive win...

2015 Archibald Portrait Entry – Stages…

‘THE MAN WHO HAS NO IMAGINATION

HAS NO WINGS’

Darren Trebilco Self-Portrait for this years 2015 Archibald Portrait competition - 'THE MAN WHO HAS NO IMAGINATION HAS NO WINGS'

Hi Solitude Art Tribe,

I thought I would share with you the development of this year’s Archibald piece.  For me, it has been a very interesting lead up to this piece, with plenty of ups and downs just to get to the starting line.  I have had issues with confirming two separate sitters for this years entry.  I had problems with the frame and getting it to the studio and of course the big issue was time…ticking away madly.  By the time I had made the first mark on my timber frame I had just under three weeks to complete the work and have it prepared for the courier.

This year’s entry was extremely different to all of my previous entries.  As I mentioned in my previous BLOG (click link) “THIS WILL EITHER TEAR ME APART OR…” , I really felt at peace with it all…time was ticking and I wasn’t frantically rushing around and it was a wonderful experience to be in the eye of the storm calm, cool and collected….FLOW NOW!

Apparently the perfect storm would was needed to achieve this piece.  I hope you enjoy this year’s entry…

For those of you who may have missed the cool details of my 2015 Archibald Portrait entry, you can read all about it  HERE. Enjoy!

Do you want to know my story? Here I am open, raw and exposed for you to judge. That is how it is in the art world. I try to communicate, you judge. It doesn’t matter what I write here, as you already have your preconceived ideas of who and what I am from a single viewing of this artwork. It all happened for you in one split moment… Am I the villain? The hero? The follower? Another clone? Or am I just an artist with a big ego, trying to make a living from his passion? Quite frankly, I don’t care what you think!

I have heard it all before…Judge away! I have. I have judged myself 1000 times over, trying to fit into society’s boxes. But guess what? I don’t fit!

I have delved into darkness, thrown myself at the light, viewed my reflection and faced my fears head on. I have been slammed over and over again in the rinse cycle of life and still I persist.

What you see in front of you is the true me. I now follow my true path with conviction. So take it or leave it! That is how it is as an independent artist. I once had all the money, the cars, the brands….and I was empty. I have chosen to opt out of competitive materialism.

I now have less money, less possessions, better health, a bigger heart and will to be the best I can be while still laughing, taking myself as far as I can! Want to join me? I am now the happiest I have ever been in my thirty-eight years of life.

I jumped off a cliff a long time ago and made the commitment that I would build my wings on the way down. I have plummeted deep down the front of the cliff face for what seems like an eternity. Hold on tight as I live life and DREAM BIG!

So look out world! I am unravelling my shiny new wings and soaring to new heights. The universe has guided me through troubled skies and now I will stay true to my soul’s destiny – to create!

I choose to FLOW NOW!

Darren Trebilco - Solitude Art Gallery

Archibald entries, Self portraits..

This week and next week Solitude Art Gallery is will be doing an online feature of the portrait . This my first self-portrait. As you might have seen I do use it through out my marketing for my Artwork/Gallery…

I hope you enjoy this piece. ‘WARRIOR’ – $NFS

This piece looks straight into the face of all doubters and says “Here I am! You can NOT look away now!” Bold and brash with strong brush strokes and no apologies. ‘WARRIOR’ is an empowering portrayal of myself in my thirty-third year and a milestone in my life and career as an artist.

While there is the obvious impression of confrontation presented to the viewer, there is also a sense of invitation, a veiled undercurrent of quite waiting – can you put aside your judgements and allow a more intimate exploration of the artist, one that on any given day winds through peaceful bush tracks, loves whole heartedly and tussles with a mind that constantly seeks? The many faces of me unfold in each vibrant mark of colour.

Juzzie Smith - A Mean Harp - Darren Trebilco

Since it is Archibald season for me and I am currently painting like mad into the early hours, I thought I would share my first entry into the 2013 Archibald Portrait Competition. This painting is called ‘JUZZIE SMITH – A MEAN HARP’ I hope you enjoy it!

Media Oil on Canvas

Artist Statement

The one man band, Juzzie Smith, uses a combination of key slide guitar, didgeridoo, stomp box, harmonica and percussion creating a unique style of music that has to be seen to be believed! Juzzie can get you feeling great and has all flavour favourites from blues to folk, groove and roots. It is feel-good music that soothes the soul and makes the heart sing.

I chose Juzzie Smith to be my sitter for the Archibald Portrait Prize for 2013. Well, I guess Juzzie Smith and the Universe did. I seriously had no intentions on participating in the competition and had plenty of other projects I was working on to keep me busy long into the year. Though, for a long time, I have been an avid listener of Juzzie’s funky blues! His music has always resonated with me and I have thought that Juzzie had a very interesting face that had a story to tell.

The story unfolds while Danielle, my beautiful partner, and I were doing our Sunday cruise through the Bulcock St Markets in Caloundra, late last December, unaware that Juzzie was playing there that day. It was only hearing his familiar musical vibrations that lead us to the harmonica master. Looking at him, this weird feeling came over me, and the next thing you know the word “Archibald” was falling out of my mouth, all by itself, as I asked Juzzie Smith if I could paint him.

From there, my schedule got pretty hectic in the lead up to organising the sitting for Juzzie. At that time, Danielle and I had just decided to put our house on the market, but before we where able to do that, we had plenty of work to do to get our home ready for selling; cleaning, gardening, the painting walls, home maintenance, all the jobs you put off now had to be done….

Juzzie Smith was also very busy with gigs and was only available to do the sitting on the 26th of January, Australia Day, leaving me only four weeks to get everything completed.

The first week got blown out from a busy work load and also getting the wrong sized canvas made up! Well an artist can change his mind and even a canvas size. The canvas just needed to be BIGGER! So, there I was, one week lost, nothing achieved and the pressure was already on!

I had plenty of ideas on how to paint Juzzie, though none of them flowed out of me! A few days rolled past with me staring at the beautiful beast of a 12 ounce canvas standing 1.8 meters tall and 1.5 meters wide, dwarfing my small studio.

Then bam! The match was struck and the painting had commenced! With that, the idea was hatched and dreamed up – no paint brushes where to be used, what so ever!!! Good times! I wanted to capture the raw, the vulnerable, the hurt, the open and exposed JUZZIE! The Juzzie Smith behind those beautiful tunes and winning smile.

Look past the Juzzie that is presented as a package with his music, and you see that deep rolling surf of emotion. Look closely and find the sunburnt reds and freckles from the Aussie sun. With the rise and fall of texture and chunkiness in the thick oil paint, his face brings forth images of the rugged Australian terrain, a part of the heart and soul of all travelling Aussies.

This all began on Australia Day, so it seemed fitting to use a colour scheme of red, white and blue!

Wave your flag, smile back to Juzzie as you see the man in action stomping away, plucking those strings and playing that mean harp as he takes you on his little journey!

Acceptance - Darren Trebilco Sunshine Coast

As a part of my portrait series this week leading up to this years Archibald here is my second self-portrait I completed a few years ago. This unique artwork is called ‘ACCEPTANCE’

Artist Statement – The night creeps it’s way ever closer to it’s decline. The fan ticks, lazy currents of oil paint and turpentine linger and float through air thick with patience, intense focus, inflaming the eyes, antagonising the nostrils. The coffee has long gone cold, the outside street heavily silent and deserted. As the enfolding night lingers, deeply pregnant with – See more at: http://solitudeart.com.au/shop/acceptance/

Bleeding Heart - Darren Trebilco Solitude Art Gallery

‘Bleeding Heart’

This moment. Your world has just been jolted and turned upside down.

This one, endless moment. Disbelief as you gaze into nothingness through your fake, sickly sweet world. The swift blow hard and fast, and your so-called life shatters. You stare in incomprehension at the broken chunks of crystallised sugar scattered around. This was my life, once…

No. The wining, dreary bullshit won’t cut it this time! Face the facts, you are what you are. Be responsible for your own short falls. No one else is to blame. Be accountable…

You thought that world of yours was all sugar, hummingbirds and good times! Turns out that behind all those smiles were bleeding hearts.

Sorry, this is a storm you’ll have to fly through…

25 Random Things about Darren Trebilco. You might not have known…

1. I like pomegranate juice!

2. My favourite medium to use would have to be oils. I just love how they go down on the canvas. Having said that, they teach me patience due to the slow drying times!

3. If you ever wondered how I keep my beard so healthy, my secret is that I use a beard balm called Scoop Delux. It’s the bomb, seriously.

4. My favourite colour is PINK.

5. I was born in Burnie, Tasmania.

6. I have trouble throwing away old faithful paint brushes.

7. I have a tattoo of the ‘Eye of Horus’ on the back of my neck that I designed myself.

8. My favorite animal is the Black Cockatoo. Every time they visit me at the Gallery the screech stops me in my tracks. I am always sad when they leave.

9. I met Danielle the LOVE of my life on an online dating site. Who says romance isn’t dead…haha

10. The surname Trebilco originates from Cornwall and has been abbreviated from the original Trebilcock.

11. Love the smell of rosemary and often use the essential oil through the day or just before going to sleep at night!

12. I spent 13 years in the Australian Army. I was also once trained in the use of multiple weapons in the army, but now the only weapon I wield is a paint brush and an bristly beard (watch out when I’m flexing, it’ll poke an eye out!).

13. I call my Land Rover ‘RHINO’ the unsung hero. She doesn’t complain when I load her up with goodies, hauling what I need from place to place, taking on everything from daily errands and picking up art/supplies to our great camping adventures away from the world.

14. I own a bougarabou drum and I really suck at playing it – I would love to be able to play it with some skill one day!

15. I could spend weeks by myself and not ever get bored! Though, I really do enjoy a good conversation when the time is right.

16. I am a romantic, that loves an open fire and I believe I have found my soul mate!

17. If you empty my pockets you generally will find rocks from my travels and small bits of broken charcoal.

18. When I feel I’m starting to get sick, I dose myself with a tea concoction of liquorice root, grated ginger, raw honey, turmeric and cinnamon with a squeeze of lemon juice. Works a treat!

19. I like tea…I have what we call “the great wall of tea”! It contains many different herbal teas for all sorts of needs. Despite such a wide selection, I still find myself gravitating back to my old faithful, lemon, ginger and honey….mmm

20. The hearty burn of chai tea is also where it is at! I make my own secret blend.

21. Shortbreads are my favorite biscuit.

22. Every now and then, I have been known to run around outside my house naked in the middle of the night with only a big stick and the assistive light on my phone, chasing possums off our roof.

23. I enjoy being close and connected with nature at the Gallery. I get really emotionally attached to the animals that live in my garden. I was so upset when I found my favourite peewee had died.

24. I enjoy a great big hug when offered…

25. Friday night is ‘Fat Friday’ in our household! This is our weekly excuse to make home made pizza. The bad or the ‘fat’ really only exists in cheese and bases being a little bad…The rest includes plenty of greens, capsicum and a small portion of organic chicken. Nice to have guilt-free pizza! A great opportunity to spend some time with my beautiful woman…

Darren Trebilco finding the creative flow at the Solitude Art Gallery

Darren Trebilco finding the creative flow at the Solitude Art Gallery

Here I am laying flat on my back taking in the warmth of the radiant sunshine, feeling a deep gratitude for the amazing journey I have undertaken over the past twelve months. The energy has ebbed and flowed with me and against me as I wrestled the creative ‘flow’ that artists talk about. Riding that stream, knowing when to jump in or out of it, is a constant struggle. It’s particularly hard to know when to make the choice to rest mentally and physically, when to rejuvenate the soul.

Learning how to make these choices has, in itself, been rewarding, however the learning has been degrading to my health! For a long time I have been feeling fatigued and feverish, had rashes and vertigo, and I felt as though I had hit a wall. Six months ago, however, I decided that I had had enough of the same old ground hog day and made a choice. My very supportive and lovely partner, Danielle, decided we should do something about it. After a few trips back and forth to naturopaths, doctors and pathology, we have come up with a result. To be honest, I thought that I might have contracted Ross River Fever, combined with maybe the stress and fatigue of the previous two years in which I set up and ran the Gallery, worked part-time in retail and created the magic on canvas that a share with you all.

When the blood test results returned just before Easter, I had one stand out result that knocked everything out of the park! My blood test for SLE had to be between 0 and 80 to be healthy. My result indicated that I scored 640! A massive indicator that something was not right…

So what is SLE? Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other organs.

So, as you can imagine, this has been affecting all aspects of my life, including my body and of course my art practice. Having lupus is not the end of the world for me, though as you can imagine, it is not to be taken lightly and has given me a massive wake up call. The big one I’m learning is to listen to my body, and working six and seven days a week as I have been is no longer a viable option for me.

You might have seen from my newsletters or Facebook posts that the Gallery hours have been reduced over the past few months. This is part of my strategy to give myself some recovery time, reduce stress, fatigue and to adapt to the new boundaries that I have set myself to manage this disease. As you can imagine, running your own business, especially as a sole trader, juggling multiple roles, can be taxing on your mind and body!

Also I have been using this time to build my energy for this years Archibald entry. With just over a month until it needs to be sent to the NSW Gallery, things are looking a little rough and it does not leave me a lot of time to complete what needs to be done. So shortly, I will be embarking on this next venture, expecting that it will either tear me apart or I will achieve what is needed to get this piece completed by the 19th June. I will post another blog about my Archie entry next month as things get rolling.

While I have been eating relatively healthily in the past, Danielle and I have had to take it to a new level. Going gluten free, vegetarian and sugar free! Well, as best we can in this wonderful modern world of instant satisfaction. This also means that alcohol, coffee, milk and all those other bad goodies have been removed from my diet to combat my lupus.

Danielle has been a silent warrior in all of this, making sure we stay on the path to getting on top of this nasty disease. By continuing this way, I will be healthier than I have ever been and I will be able to manage the flare ups a lot better with all of the preservatives removed from my food. Clean living, clean body and clean mind! I either do it this way or I take heavy medications that will increase the risk of my organs shutting down and aggravating my body further. I guess in early June when I see the rheumatologist I will also have their perspective on how I should deal with this.

I do see this current condition as a blessing. Combining an early detection of lupus with an increasingly healthy lifestyle, I will have a fighting chance to deal with the disease and return to more time in front of the easel where I belong!

The other positive is I am learning patience and not to sweat the little things. I think my two current paintings of black cockatoos have been a strong symbol for this, as both these pieces have been up on the easel since January and are nearing completion in the coming weeks. They have been a journey into my spirit, the universe and how I look at the world.

Painting of the Month ‘SUN GOD’

Sun God - Solitude Art GalleryLook to the east and find the horizon. There you stand at dawn, waiting in silence for the eruption of the first rays of the mighty ‘SUN GOD’. She radiates crimson, orange, ochre, full of strength, courage and blazing power! She has blessed us with towering forests, warm waters and an abundance of life. Earth’s provider.

The ever present sun bursts forth, sharing her energy with friends and foes alike, giving without favour to all living things on this beautiful planet. The ‘SUN GOD’ does not discriminate and shares with all… So take in her glory and filll your heart with the sun’s warmth. Be kind and giving to yourself and your fellow beings. Share the embrace of the eternally generous ‘SUN GOD'; an example for all of humanity.

Now take a moment and look west for one final glimpse before she dips below the horizon, falling with the dusk. Give thanks for the undying companionship of the sun, her rise at dawn long taken for granted. Express gratitude for the teachings she offers as we journey around her in the timeless dance.

Share, Love and ‘BE LIKE THE SUN’.

New Artwork – ‘SHAPE SHIFTER’

Shape Shifter - Chameleon painting by Darren Trebilco

New Artwork – ‘SHAPE SHIFTER’

Media Oil on Canvas

Size H 900mm x W 405mm x B 45mm

Artist Darren Trebilco

‘Buy now, cry later’ as they say!

ULYSSES BY SUNSHINE COAST LOCAL ARTIST DARREN TREBILCO - OWNER OF THE SOLITUDE ART GALLERYMedia Pastel on Canvas

Size H 900mm x W 1200mm x B 45mm

Artist Darren Trebilco

Bask in the everlasting glory of this revered and majestic beast. In just over a century, the losses of the tiger population have been documented to be at a staggering 97%. This animal is now the centre of attention for all of the wrong reasons with only as few as 3,200 existing in the wild today. Unrelenting pressure from poaching, retaliatory killings and habitat loss has brought the tiger near extinction.

Respect this solitary hunter as it uses creative intelligence and cunning to ambush and stalk its prey. Admire its power as this superior animal’s hunt comes to a sudden end, taking its prey quickly and efficiently. Find the courage to seek past your own fears and insecurities and look into the eyes of one of nature’s most awesome creations. Feel the connection, our common bond, the ever-present instinct to survive. To eat. To live free. A glimmer of our original selves is held in that piercing gaze.

Will this be a short journey for ‘ULYSSES’, followed by a quick and brutal ending for the big cat? Or will man have the compassion to give this majestic beast the opportunity to grow old, grow in number. Will this remnant of Mother Earth’s truly wild children be present to remind our future generations of what can be found in our untamed depths.

‘WAR PAINT’ Artist Darren Trebilco

WAR PAINT BY SUNSHINE COAST ARTIST DARREN TREBILCOMedia Acrylic on Canvas

Size H 900mm x W 1200mm x B 45mm

Artist Darren Trebilco

Times have changed, voices now silenced from heavy hands. Pushed, prodded, enraged, tired of being controlled. The irritating, meaningless, white noise distracting and infuriating. A distorted sense of necessity brought us here, suffocating a reality that once was. The gentle, warming flicker that once lead us home and safe has been enraged by a toxic fuel, threatening to engulf us in an uncontrollable inferno.

The critical time for action approaches. Look around. Feel the energy build. Embrace the electric calm. A storm approaches and soon, very soon, there will be no going back.

The tirades and onslaught of abuse have taken their toll. Provoked and bleeding, have you had enough? The moment has arrived. Air thick with anticipation. Sweat drips down your face as the worries, fears, disconnection from the truth, congeal, become thick. You submerge your fingers in the stuff and raise them to your face, apply your ‘WAR PAINT’….

Take a step back, just for a moment. You are now centre stage, the moment of no return… Pores oozing fuel and adrenalin, you let out one, terrible war cry, a throat-tearing ROAR! The wrath has arrived.

As the battle commences, you take one last glance left, then right. Who will survive this? Are you the endangered species? Will you be on the extinction list? Who will be next?

“Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light”.

‘KING DES’ by Darren Trebilco

KING DES BY SUNSHINE COAST ARTIST DARREN TREBILCOMedia Mixed Media on Timber Frame

Size H 950mm x W 600mm x B 45mm

Artist Darren Trebilco

With a whoosh of striking red and brilliant green, ‘DES’ swooped down into my life to capture my heart. With character that packed a punch and childlike qualities that charmed, I named him ‘DES’ as he was nothing short of a perpetual ‘DES-straction’! Constantly being a nuisance, squawking to be fed, he would not let up until he had his way.

‘DES’ would visit at impromptu times, especially when I was in the middle of painting a major section in the studio, and would always want to be the centre of attention. There were instances in which he would sneak up and sit on the window’s edge of the studio, clucking and announcing his presence, demanding undivided attention and love. If that wasn’t enough, he would launch into the studio at full speed, sending paint and brushes flying. Yes, that brave and mighty King Parrot would get his way!

Being a magnificent parrot and a KING, at that, I guess I, too, would expect to be fussed over! He always new how to arrive in style, banking hard and landing abruptly, with a short pause in anticipation of the resounding applause that he obviously deserved for his mad feat! It was definitely exciting to watch ‘DES’ and be a part of his show. And, he just new to arrive when I was down and needed to be cheered up or needed some distraction from life’s troubles…

It has been January since you last visited, King of Hearts…I hope you find clear and calm skies. You are missed at the Gallery ‘KING DES’!

Latest Artwork ‘Edwards Secret Garden’

EDWARDS SECRET GARDEN PHOTO SHOOT FOR SUNSHINE COAST ARTIST DARREN TREBILCO

Latest Art work ‘Edwards Secret Garden’ is the Sunshine Coast Dynamic Artist Darren Trebilco.

As you dip your toes into the warm Pacific waters that embrace our coast, take a moment to let your gaze drift across the deepest blue, towards the horizon.  Do you see that tell-tale spray, plumes of salty mist riding the wind?  Signs a gentle giant passes by, lulled by those same temperate tides that you, too, enjoy.  With a sudden breach he introduces himself, inviting you to play.  Will you take the plunge?  Meet Edward.  He has a secret to tell…

The watery world of the magnificent humpback was once fraught with danger.  Many of his family travelled north, as he does now, following the paths of their ancestors, yet did not return.  The tides became red and the might of these behemoths waned.

The times change though, much as they always have, but now there is renewal drifting the great currents.  Mankind, who once caused the humpback to disappear, ever fickle as the winds, has befriended this great ocean wanderer.  Edward’s secret is hope.  His future is a hidden garden in which he may, soon, be able to play, and, if the tides will it, share.

En-joy

I have had this favorite vibrant PINK for some time now and I was devastated to hear it was discontinued a couple of years ago, I was left scratching my head… I just loved the colour and consistency it went down on the canvas!

I was surfing the net the other day and stumbled over my favorite paint. Imagine the delight! A guy in Melbourne was selling 4 litres of this liquid gold and I just had to have it! It was worth every cent of the $15 to freight up to the Gallery…Good times ahead! And stay tuned for some vibrant pink creative goodness coming your way!

The beginnings of ‘HAT FITZ BEARDED BLUES’ by Darren Trebilco

This morning I happy to announce that my 2014 Archibald Portrait Entry ‘HAT FITZ – BEARDED BLUES’ has been delivered to the Solitude Art Gallery. The past 3 months has been a wonderful journey. Thank you for all of the support, following my progress in the studio with interest in my quest in completing a beautiful piece of artwork. I feel as though I have captured the rawness of my sitter Hat Fitz and I am very happy with the end result…

BEGININGS OF 'HAT FITZ - BEARDED BLUES' MIXED MEDIA UP CLOSE DETAIL
This piece for me was a new venture with a mixed media piece that used a wooden panel instead of the usual canvas for me. The use of wallpaper, charcoal, acrylic, wire brushes, gas soldering iron, and a sander was all a great challenge and plenty of fun!

SOLITUDE ART GALLERY FRESH START ON THE EASEL

SOLITUDE ART GALLERY FRESH START ON THE EASEL

What has been happening in the Solitude Art Gallery Studio….

Hi everyone, just dropping a line to say hi and let you know what has been happening in the Solitude Art Gallery Studio…. absolutely NOTHING! Well not really true.

After completing my Archibald entry ‘HAT FITZ – BEARDED BLUES’  I knew I was finally running out of steam and needed a well earned break! So my beautiful partner and I decided to spend a week out at the beautiful Carnarvon Gorge reconnecting with nature. This area is an amazing part of the country, full of old energy and unbelievable scenery that was filled with plenty of wildlife experiences to!

When I returned I had four days to complete ‘THREE PARROT SWING’ for a new exhibition called ‘Celebration of the Female Form’. With over 100 artists entering it was always going to be a great show!

I left the artwork to the last minute deliberately in the hope our trip out west would do its magic and re-energised me. Even it meant four days of sleepless nights…The piece for me was a success, completed on time and amazing!

So absolutely NOTHING began and I decided to take the following three weeks off from creating. Just to STOP! Something I find very hard to do! If I am not doing this then I am usually doing that. Sometimes you need to take some time out to recharge the creative batteries and take it all in. Reflection can be a great tool in seeing what you have achieved.

It has been a long 12 months since the Gallery doors open, though the process has been a beautiful journey of exploration of what I really want to achieve from all of this. I have discovered being a one man band or maybe an octopus has put things into perspective. You can not always get what you want when you want it! As I am usually juggling five other tasks at the same time, that it is not possible.

So each little achievement in the Gallery has been very rewarding; I see it as I am creating the building blocks of something so much bigger! To do that, I needed a strong foundation. This year has been about exactly that, building a strong foundation. This has been tested day in day out of the strength and resilience of my creation and making it a success!

The second biggest lesson for me has been PATIENCE…My nemesis that sits on my shoulder and occasionally gives me a hard time. I have been learning the art of patience everyday and believing in my art practice, allowing the creation to flow. Clear from any blockages and expectations. I am also working on to accept what I have achieved that day and what I did not complete!

I would LIKE to thank all of the followers for the Gallery and the continued support, understanding and I hope have enjoy watching my DREAM unfold!

It has been a beautiful experience of growth, patience and strength in staying TRUE to my heart! Your Support has been very much appreciated!

As apart of our celebrations for our First Birthday, if you visit the Solitude Art Gallery, you will receive 10% off all the Gallery marked prices…

THREE PARROT SWING 1 DARREN TREBILCO SOLITUDE ART GALLERY

There she is stripped bare, as vulnerable and exposed as the day she entered the world. Free from judgement, free from fear…pure as nature intended. I gaze upon her smile, those lips, soft, delicate and complete. Her eyes dazzle and intrigue, smouldering with deep passion.

The body is natural and provocative, catching me up and losing me in endless lines and possibilities. She is radiant, full of hope, wisdom and tender care, every soft word captivating my soul.

How did this exquisite creature come to stand beside me on my journey? As the universe knows, so does she.

HAT FITZ – BEARDED BLUES

‘Hat Fitz- Bearded Blues’ Darren Trebilco’s 2014 Archibald Portrait entry.

HAT FITZ - BEARDED BLUES - Darren Trebilco 2014 Archibald Portrait entry

The authentic, bushy-bearded men of the “good ol’ days”, remnants of the outback, are going the way of the Tasmanian tiger. Back then, life was so simple, men where men and women where women and well, life was just life. You took the good with the bad and there was no need to sugar coat it.

This rugged infusion of Aussie mountain man and international blues singer is as engaging and genuine as they come.  A blue-collar working man with grit and a love of the blues!  The wild man of the blues scene was bewitched by the soulful, old-time holler of Cara Robinson, now his wife. The dynamic duo has been cutting loose all over Oz, creating their own sound.  They can be found in many an Aussie pub along the East Coast or rocking it out at a major festival as far abroad as the UK.

From a distance, you will encounter the visage of a gruff man, bearded and simple, weathered by the wild, howling winds of life, who has worked with endless passion as an old-time, country blues picker.  Look closer, into the eyes of this gentle giant of a man, and you can still see the authentic, raw splendour, colour and love that Cara found in him and that he now shares with the world.

Playing the blues can be fun, but living the life of the blues can be rough.  Listen out for that engaging, powerful snarl and the rhythm from ‘Fitzy’s’ resonator guitar.  Appreciate the sounds as he gets ya movin’ and feelin’ the BLUEs!

Hoping Hat makes the cut…

My 2014 Archibald Portrait of Hat Fitz also made it to page 5 of the Sunshine Coast Daily on the 14th June.

Sorry about the delay in getting the articles up though the newspapers were both very keen to get the article and photo’s in the paper. This all happened while we were away from the Solitude Art Gallery unwinding at the Carnarvon Gorge for a well earned break!.

I hope you enjoy the article.

Letting the lines of life direct the brush

Sunshine Coast artist Darren Trebilco has been receiving accolades for this year’s Archibald Portrait Prize entry from those have been visiting his studio to view the piece as it has taken shape. Owner of the Solitude Art Gallery/Open Studio in Glenview, Darren says that some avid visitors have been dropping in weekly to see the progress and direction he has taken on his portrait of ‘Hat Fitz’, the Australian wild man of blues. While previous years have seen Darren’s latest work closed off to the public, through his newly-opened Art Gallery and Open Studio, the public can now see each phase of development that a major piece like this goes through and even ask the artist questions.

Darren’s portrait sitter for this year’s Archibald, ‘Hat Fitz’, has the “face of a weathered, bearded mountain man and the personality of an Aussie larrikin,” and Darren was excited by the idea of creating such an intriguing face in paint. Hat Fitz’s wife, the other half of the dynamic blues duo, Hat Fitz and Cara, have said that they were very pleased with Darren’s work and felt as though the piece had “really captured ‘Fitzy’.”

Venturing into uncharted territory this year, the dynamic artist has taken a completely different approach to his previous entries in the Archibald Prize. Darren says he has removed the thought process of painting. “I’ve opted for a ‘Mu shin’ no mind approach by allowing my hand to do the creating,” he says. “This is a style I have called ‘Now-ism’.”

The artist mentioned that he had no preconceived ideas on how he wanted the final portrait piece to look. “I strove to be in the moment and let the lines of life engraved into Fitzy’s face direct the flow of the brush.” The Glenview artist said that he felt he had encapsulated the true essence of his sitter and couldn’t be happier with this year’s Archibald Portrait entry.

With the piece standing at 1.8 meters tall by 1.5 meters wide, Darren chose to steer away from the traditional canvas surface , opting instead for a wide frame covered in timbre and wallpaper. “Fitzy is a simple man. He doesn’t stand on ceremony and canvas just seemed a little too refined a surface for depicting this man’s bumpy life.”

Darren’s latest artwork is a combination of techniques that the professional artist has been developing and honing throughout his career. With the colour, quality and vibrancy that the Sunshine Coast has come to expect from Trebilco artwork, each piece offers an energy of originality and strength.

Darren likens the process of painting to being a “kid in a candy store, wanting one of these and one of those and kind of mixing them all up.” Throw in the personality of the colourful, wild and hairy Sunshine Coast artist and you have a very interesting recipe for some untamed and innovative artwork!

The Artwork will be couriered down to the NSW Art Gallery for judging on the 12th June, with the finalist being notified on the 10th of July and the winner of the 2014 Archibald Portrait Prize will be announced on 18th July.

You can visit the Solitude Art Gallery located at 163 Glenview Road, Glenview to view further artwork created by Darren Trebilco, visit his website at www.solitudeart.com.au or follow the Solitude Art (Official) Gallery on Facebook or Instagram.
