The storm was one for the record books. It’s wild intensity, mountainous waves and driving winds brought even the most courageous to run for the safety of brick and mortar. It felt like a reordering of things, as though the earth sought to cull the weak and leave only the strongest behind to take up the challenge of a new world. All that the sea held, on a once glassy surface and in dark, murky depths had been ripped up by a turbulent and capricious forces.
In the storm’s wake, dazed survivors discovered, upon a tentative return, that much had been deposited on the shores. Lives had been lost and many found themselves picking up the pieces of their own existence, trying to figure out how it all worked now. Careful steps were needed along the shore as debris was examined, sometimes discarded and sometimes salvaged. As the churned up, silty waters still settled, those that remained standing dug their toes into wet earth, grateful for its solid, grounding presence.
